Sahitya Akademi Awards Conferred for Literary Excellence

Context: The Sahitya Akademi formally conferred its prestigious annual literary awards in New Delhi, honouring outstanding authors across 24 Indian languages.

Key Highlights:

• National Standing:- Established in 1954, the Sahitya Akademi Award is one of India’s highest national literary honours, recognizing creative excellence in the 22 languages listed in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution, along with English and Rajasthani.
• Award Structure:- Each awardee is presented with an engraved copper-plaque, a traditional shawl, and a cash prize of ₹1,00,000.
• Kannada Language:- Prominent writer Amaresh Nugadoni was honoured for his celebrated short story collection Dada Seerisu Tande.
• English Language:- Veteran diplomat and author Navtej Sarna received the award for his acclaimed historical novel Crimson Spring, which centers on the events surrounding the 1919 Jallianwala Bagh massacre.
• Hindi Language:- Renowned author Mamta Kalia was recognized for her biographical memoir Jeete Jee Allahabad.

• Mascot Symbolism:- Inspired by the Indian peacock, ‘Mayur’ features feathers incorporating the national flags of all participating nations, representing the philosophy of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam (the world is one family). 
• Host & Schedule:- Scheduled from July 27 to August 2, 2026, at the Thyagaraj Stadium, New Delhi, bringing together paddlers from over 25 Commonwealth nations.

1. Jagannath Rath Yatra 2026 Commences in Puri, Odisha

Why in News: The world-renowned Jagannath Rath Yatra 2026 commenced on July 16, 2026 along the Grand Road (Bada Danda) in the historic temple town of Puri, Odisha.

Key Highlights:

• Core Significance:- Dedicated to Lord Jagannath (a form of Lord Vishnu/Krishna), his elder brother Lord Balabhadra, and his sister Goddess Subhadra, commemorating their annual journey from the 12th-century Shree Jagannath Temple to their maternal aunt’s home at the Shree Gundicha Temple.
• Prominent Rituals:- A major highlight is the Chhera Pahara—a sacred rite where the Gajapati King of Puri sweeps the chariot floors with a golden broom, symbolizing radical universal equality before the divine. The nine-day festival concludes with the return procession known as the Bahuda Yatra.
• Historical Standing:- Celebrated continuously for centuries, it is one of India’s oldest and largest religious processions. It is unique because the deities leave the sanctum sanctorum to allow universal darshan to people of all backgrounds, overriding traditional temple entry restrictions.
• Chariot Construction:- The three massive wooden chariots are rebuilt from scratch every year by hereditary carpenters (Maharanas) using sacred timber sourced from specified Odisha forests without using any metal nails. The construction process traditionally commences on Akshaya Tritiya.

2. Bihar Heli-Tourism and Air Tourism Service Scheme 2026 Launched

Why in News: Bihar’s Tourism Department, in collaboration with the Directorate of Civil Aviation, officially launched the Bihar Heli-Tourism and Air Tourism Service Scheme 2026.

• Connectivity Nodes:- Connects the state capital Patna to key ecological, historical, and religious tourist destinations, including Valmikinagar, Rajgir, and the Maa Mundeshwari Temple. 
• Affordable Transit:- Deploys heavily subsidized small aircraft and helicopters to make aerial travel accessible and economical for regular commuters and tourists. 
• Strategic Objective:- Aims to enhance remote connectivity, boost local economies, and position Bihar as a prominent global tourism hub.
